Wild birds require water in the winter months as well as in the Spring,
Summer, and Fall. If wild birds can't get water they will perish. In
order to keep wild birds coming to your location, provide a heated bird
bath to counter the icy conditions of winter. Birds can waste a lot of
energy searching for water sources in winter time. It is very difficult
to locate wild birds in winter but with the addition of a heated bird
bath you enhance your probability of attracting a wide variety of
birds even in the dead of winter. Not all birds will come to your
feeders but all birds need water even in winter. A
heated bird bath
will require a power source. Most newer homes have GFCI
(ground fault circuit interrupter) installed somewhere on the outside of
the house. If your home doesn't have one you can have an electrician
install one. You need one for the use of power tools around the outside
of the house anyway. They are fairly inexpensive and all homes should have one
on the front and back of the house. There are two ways to provide
water for your wild birds in winter: Firstly, simply add a
bird bath de-icer or heater to an existing bird bath. Secondly, you may add a
heated bird bath with the heating element built into the bowl. The
all-in-one units may be used during the warm months as well, just don't
plug them into the electrical circuitry. |
